Passwords

NOTE! The information below is only valid for DSV students who have been registered at DSV before the autumn of 2011. Newer DSV students get a single university account which is valid for all DSV systems.

Three different passwords

When you register as a student at DSV you will get a "user name" for the different computer systems at DSV and one password. This password is valid for the following three systems:

  1. A Windows password for the personal computers in the DSV computer rooms on floors 4 and 5 in Forum when they are booted with the Microsoft Windows operating system and when you access our Windows terminal server ariel.dsv.su.se
  2. A First Class password for the First Class system at DSV
  3. A Kerberos password stored on a special Kerberos server which is used to login at:
    • The personal computers on floor 4 and 5 when they are booted with the operating system Debian GNU/Linux
    • The Debian GNU/Linux shell server triton.dsv.su.se accessed with SSH, TightVNC etc.
    • Reading e-mail with POP or IMAP from the mail server mail.dsv.su.se
    • Accessing the Daisy system at https://daisy.dsv.su.se/

Initially the password is the same for the three different categories. However if you change the password for one category, for example First Class, the other two passwords will not be changed. If you want you can have three different passwords for the three different categories.

Choose a good password

Choose a good password when you change it so it is hard to crack. Please read the tips about how to choose a good password.

Changing password

This is how you change your password on our different systems:

  • PC with MS Windows: Press Control-Alt-Delete
  • First Class: Click on the menu "Collaborate" in the First Class client and choose "Change password...".
  • Kerberos: Use the Unix shell command "kpasswd" in a Linux terminal window or use this web page

Forgot your password?

If you have forgot your password then the systems group can't inform you about it, instead you must get a new one. Please visit Olli Vesanto at the DSV IT unit, room 6427. Bring your ID card. The password is normally only handed out in person.

Phishing

Phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

Sometimes you may receive an e-mail which requires you to send in your user-id and password. Note that DSV never asks for passwords by e-mail or phone. The e-mail sender can be faked so don't rely on it that the e-mail is from DSV staff. The purpose of getting the user-id and password is to use the owners e-mail account to send out spam. An example of a phishing e-mail is:
