Microsoft Windows Terminal Server

DSV has a special Microsoft Windows 2003 Terminal Server named ts.dsv.su.se. You can connect to it from a PC running Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux or MacOS as the operating system. You will then get access to a graphical Microsoft Windows environment on the server which corresponds to Microsoft Windows XP on a PC. This may be convenient when:

  • the Microsoft Windows software you want to use is not installed on a lab PC but is found on the Terminal Server
  • you are normally using a portable PC of your own and want to use the Microsoft Windows environment at DSV
  • you are at home with an Internet connection and want to use the Microsoft Windows environment at DSV
  • you don't have Microsoft Windows on your PC but instead e.g. GNU/Linux or MacOS X

Clients

By default the operating system Microsoft Windows  has a Terminal Server client installed called "Remote Desktop Connection". If you have a version of Microsoft Windows lacking the client  it is possible to fetch the Terminal Server client from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/. Look at "Server Applications".

Users of the operating system GNU/Linux can also access our Windows Terminal Server. The program to use is called "rdesktop" and you can get it from http://www.rdesktop.org/. rdesktop is installed on all PCs with GNU/Linux in the computer lab rooms at DSV. You can start rdesktop with the shell command "rdesktop". It will automatically choose ts.dsv.su.se as server. If you want to enlarge the window you can for example add the option "-g 80%".

The Linux server triton.dsv.su.se can also be accesses via a RDP-klient as rdesktop or a Windows Remote Desktop Connection client.

Users of the operating system MacOS X can fetch a stable client from Microsoft here.

Logon

Logon to the Windows Terminal Server ts.dsv.su.se using your regular login ID and your Microsoft Windows password. You will then have access to your files on the Microsoft Windows file server "goofy2", and the file server "oberon" if you choose to connect to it.
