Wireless network

In the Forum building there is a wireless network following the IEEE standard 802.11g. The network is called "KTHOPEN". There are a number of base stations in different places in Forum and Electrum. The base stations are at this moment able to communicate at up to 54 Mbit/s according to the IEEE 802.11g standard. If you supply your computer with a wireless PC Card network card which is WiFi certified or your computer has a built-in wireless network card you can connect to the KTHOPEN network. Follow the instructions below to connect to the KTHOPEN network:

  1. Set up your laptop to receive IP number and DNS addresses dynamically through DHCP.
  2. Visit a place in Forum where the wireless network card has contact with a base station in the KTHOPEN network.
  3. Choose "KTHOPEN" as wireless network and click OK that the connection is unsafe (pertains to Windows XP).
  4. Start a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, and you will be automatically transferred to a web page for log on.
  5. Enter your user name and your network secret.  Choose DSV.SU.SE as REALM. You can get your network secret from https://wpa.dsv.su.se.
  6. You now have access to the Internet from your laptop.

Connecting to KTHOPEN using WPA

By configuring your computer to use WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), you will be able to connect to the KTHOPEN wireless network automatically without having to login every time. Please see the instructions for configuring WPA if you want to use it.

Rooms for using the wireless network

You can virtually be anywhere in Forum and connect your laptop through the wireless connection. At DSV there are also special places which are suited for wireless connection. Computer room 402 on floor 4, room 5446 on floor 5 and the group work corridor on floor 6.

Wired connection

In the rooms which can be used for wireless connection there are also outlets for connecting laptops with a network cable (of the regular TP type). There are outlets in the group work rooms, room 402 and 5446. The outlets allow computers to be connected at 1000 Mbit/s. When connecting with these outlets you will, just as when connecting to the wireless network, have to start a web browser and give user name and Kerberos password to access the KTHOPEN computer network.

Password problems

If you have problems with your password for connecting to the wireless network but your password works for other services, then you have to update your password so that it has a certain extra encryption information. You can use the web page http://dsv.su.se/kpasswd to change the password. In this case it is possible to reuse you old password, so long as it is updated.

Connecting to printers and file server

It is possible to access the printers \\donald\blyger, \\donald\sushi and \\donald\glader from a laptop connected to the KTHOPEN network. The trick is to enter the IP number of DSVs WINS servers to the IP settings of your Windows PC. In Windows XP this is done in the following way:

  1. Connect the computer to the Internet with the KTHOPEN network web interface as usual. Start menu : Settings : Network connections.
  2. Right click on Wireless connection and choose Properties
  3. Choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  4. Choose Advanced and the tab WINS settings
  5. Choose Add and enter DSVs WINS servers 130.237.161.6  and 130.237.157.7
  6. Click OK.

After this you can add printers like you normally would by explicitly enter \\donald\blyger as desired printer, and the equivalent for the printers sushi and glader.

After having pointed out DSVs WINS servers it is possible to connect to the file servers goofy2 and oberon to access your home directories.

In cooperation with KTH.
