Master's Programme in ICT for development

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) revolution has changed the way the world learns, communicates, does business and cures illnesses. Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) is the application of ICT for socio-economic development in a broad sense with focus on the specific needs and problems in developing countries.. The Department of Computer and Systems Sciences at Stockholm University has pioneered in the field of ICT for development for over 15 years. This involvement has spanned all areas from infrastructure development to general and specific capacity building

There is a steadily growing demand in the developing world for individuals skilled in the use of technology and deployment of information systems and the management of information, but also knowledge on hardware and software levels, knowledge on open source software, e-Democracy, policies to decrease the gender inequality in Internet usage, and strategies to establish certification authorities for the growth of the e-business environment.

The master´s programme in  ICT for development at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) will develop your skills and knowledge needed to address these issues in developing countries. It focuses on the application of ICT for socio-economic development, governance, crisis management and recovery, international relations, regional planning, risk management, digital forensics and security. In addition to a solid background in computer and systems sciences, the programme provides a relevant basis in social sciences.

EEA residence permit the last application date wil be January 15. For applicants within the EU/EEA the last application date is April 15. The application procedure for the first deadline will open on December 1st at studera.nu.

The programme is intended for students and top-level or mid-level administrators and executives who would like to broaden and deepen their knowledge of ICT, its management and application to the developing world. Typical professional roles for graduates of this programme include consultants and project managers in ICT projects in global settings with a focus on developing countries.

Qualification requirement

A Bachelor degree or a degree equal to 180 ECTS. A minimum of 90 ECTS in the area of computer and system science.

Language proficiency

Swedish upper secondary school course English B or:

  • ELTS (International English Language Testing Service)- Academic Module: Overall minimum score of 6.5 and a minimum of 6 in each subtest: listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    • Computer Based: Overall minimum score of 233 including a minimum Test of Written English (TWE) score of 18
    • Paper Based: Overall minimum score of 577 including a minimum TWE score of 50.
    • Internet based : Overall minimum score of 91 including a minimum TWE score of 13.
  • UEEC (UNSW Institute of Languages University English Entry Course): Overall minimum score of C+ (Grade point 7.0) with a minimum score of 20 in the writing component.
  • CULT (Combined Universities Language Test): Overall minimum score of 70 with a minimum score of 17 in each of the sub-tests of listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
  • CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English): minimum grade B

Application

The programme will not start in 2011 and is not open for application.
