Courses

This section gives a tentative outline of the courses that will be given as a part of the master programme. Names and descriptions might change before programme starts in fall 2011 but the general content will stay the same. 

Practical project management (7,5Hp)

This is an introductory course to the topic of project management that touches upon many of the topics that will be covered in more depth during this 2-year program. Furthermore, it establishes a vocabulary and a basic understanding of concepts in project management.

Business strategy and IT-projects (7,5Hp)

In this course we explain the IT-projects in the context of overall business organization and also some common models used in the strategic work of an organization, connected to IT projects. We also provide some useful tools for selecting and comparing different projects and projects ideas. Furthermore we describe the content of project portfolio management examines different kinds of IT-projects and their characteristics.

Leadership in projects I (7,5Hp)

The first course (out of two) in leadership focuses on the various theories and models commonly used in management. We will examine current research, analyze management models and you are also given an introduction to decision science and how to coach employees.

Leadership in projects II (7,5Hp)

In this the second course in leadership we shift our attention to you and what type of leader you are, how and what areas of leadership that you need to focus on. This is done through application of the various techniques covered in Leadership in Projects I.

Information and Communication in IT projects (7,5Hp) 

This course aims to give a broad understanding of communication in theory and the dynamic of communication in small groups including specific knowledge on conflict management. It also aims to enable the student in using practical project related information and communication tools that may be useful throughout the project process such as communication strategy, writing tips and presentation techniques.

IT project methodology (7,5Hp)

A course covering project models, the relationship between the development model and the project management model, Agile projects, and various other methodologies used in project management. 

Controlling IT projects (7,5Hp)

The techniques of planning and monitoring were introduced in the course “Practical Project Management” and in this course we go deeper in these areas. The course provides methods and techniques for planning: (1) time, (2) resources and (3) cost as well as ways to keep track on these parameters. A special emphasis is made on how the situation and actions taken should be presented for different stakeholders in order to get support, acceptance, and understanding.

Business Law (7,5Hp)

This course is designed for project managers and will give you the necessary understanding of areas such as agreements, business law, intellectual property rights and so on.  

Scientific methods (7,5Hp)

This is a foundation course in scientific methods that serves as a foundation for the master thesis project. This course will cover various approaches to research, scientific writing, and also give an introduction to the research community and how it works.

Scientific writing (7,5Hp)

This is a foundation course in scitific writing designed to give you the student the necessary tools to write in a scietific way and also to prepare you for the master thesis project. 

Workplace training (15Hp)

This course aims to give the students an opportunity to get hands on experience with a real company. The student can find a company of their own (Prefered, but must be IT related) where the idea is that the student follows a professional project manager during a period of 20 weeks. During this time the student is required to hand in a number of assignments, analyze, and reflect upon their experiences.

Master thesis (30Hp)

This is the last course you take before completing your master’s degree. In this course you are required to write a large independent thesis in the area of project management.
