Project description

The research focusses on describing the normative aspects of social play in online virtual worlds. The focus is directed towards the norms of individual players, group play (in guilds and clans) and on how 'Non Player Characters' could be improved to support player norms. Building on an understanding of group norms, we aim to apply the same to model the behaviour for NPC.

The research is primarily qualitative and uses methods of participatory observation and online ethnography. Theories from sociology and group psychology are used to create a framework for data analysis.
