Theme: Framing, Writing and Disseminating ICT4D Research
Guest Speaker: Professor Richard Heeks, Centre for Development Informatics, University of Manchester, UK

This is a two-part seminar.  The first part will be an interactive session drawing lessons from the speaker's and the audience’s experiences of planning, writing and disseminating ICT4D research, looking at issues including: identifying your audience, honing your message, selecting your channel, marketing your work, and considering the three touchstones of good research: rigour, originality and significance.

The second part will be a more conventional presentation-then-discussion of the role of critical realism as a research paradigm for ICT4D research.  Based on an explanation of the key features of critical realism, the presentation will argue it has both a generic and specific value to ICT4D.  Generic value includes exposure of context, support for use of theoretical frames in ICT4D, and legitimisation of different stakeholder views.  Specific value includes links to current trends in ICT4D research: the growing search for causal links between “ICT” and “D”, and political and ethical “turns”.  The presentation is linked to publication of a special issue of The Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries on critical realism and ICT4D.
