The Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) is the largest and oldest IT department in Sweden and one of the largest departments at Stockholm University with around 6 000 students. The discipline of computer and systems sciences bridges the gap between technology and the humanities, social sciences, and behavioral sciences. The use and design of IT is put in context in relation to people, organizations, and society. DSV offers a stimulating research environment in an international setting.

Project description
This PhD position is in digital forensics, which is the use of methods from computer science/engineering to answer questions that are relevant for law enforcement and the courts. The PhD-project will be conducted in co-operation with Swedish police, mainly via the National Forensic Center. There are many possible fields of co-operation/research. Based on the interests and qualifications of the applicant, any well motivated research within the larger digital forensics field is possible.

The initial idea is to study how IoT/Cloud computing/Edge computing in the near future, will affect the possibility of conducting police investigations. Today, methods (and the law) assumes that evidence can be found in a specific device with built in storage. However, today much data storage and processing are performed by different cloud services. With the advent of IoT devices, e.g. small internet connected devices such as security cameras, various sensors etc. this shift has accelerated. These small devices seldom store or process data locally. Instead, data is stored and processed in the cloud, or still in the network but closer to the end user (so called edge computing). Current forensic products and procedures are ill equipped to meet this challenge.

We are looking for a PhD student that preferably has a background in: low level programming, hardware, operating systems, networking, reverse engineering, etc., and has a strong willingness and documented ability to learn. Swedish citizenship is a plus, as research could require a security clearance. The ability to speak and write Swedish is also a considerable advantage as much of the information is only available in Swedish. Publication/writing will be mostly in English.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the applicant must have completed courses at second-cycle level in Computer and systems sciences with a minimum of 90 higher education credits, or equivalent, including a thesis with a minimum of 15 higher education credits.

In addition, the applicant is required to have English language skills equivalent of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Level B2.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity:

  • Independence in the analysis and organization of the earlier work
  • Problem formulation and rigor in previous work and in the research plan
  • Previously shown ability to keep the specified time limits
  • Methodological and scientific maturity
  • Communication and cooperation skills
  • Subject specific knowledge relevant to education.
