The Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) is one of the oldest IT departments in Sweden and one of the largest departments at Stockholm University with around 5 000 students. The discipline of computer and systems sciences bridges the gap between technology and the humanities, social sciences, and behavioral sciences. The use and design of IT is put in context in relation to people, organizations, and society. DSV offers a stimulating research environment in an international setting.

Project description
Machine Learning and Data-Driven Decision-Making in Critical Societal Infrastructures:
The digitalization of critical infrastructures such as water distribution networks, urban transportation, and power systems is expected to drastically improve the sustainability and efficiency of future smart societies. This technical revolution is driven by advances of networked sensing, computing, and actuating devices that collect data that they use to monitor, connect, and control their physical environment. The key challenge addressed in this project is how we design distributed AI and machine learning algorithms for intelligent decision making in these systems. Depending on the candidate’s qualifications and scientific interests, the project can be directed towards algorithm development or the underlying technical or theoretical foundations.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the applicant must have completed courses at second-cycle level in Computer and systems sciences with a minimum of 90 higher education credits, or equivalent, including a thesis with a minimum of 15 higher education credits. In addition, the applicant is required to have English language skills equivalent of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Level B2.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.
