Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) is one of the top conferences in the information systems area. This year, it was held virtually on August 9–13.

Rahmat Mulyana, Lazar Rusu and Erik Perjons, all members of the IT Management and Governance Group at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV), Stockholm University, contributed with a literature study. The title is “IT Governance Mechanisms Influence on Digital Transformation. A Systematic Literature Review” and the paper is published in AMCIS 2021 Proceedings. A month after the conference, it stood out as one of the most downloaded papers.

The researchers conclude that many organizations are concerned about growing their direct investments in digital technologies. Previous studies have found that IT governance plays an important role in organizations’ digital initiatives. The studies have also identified structures, processes, and relational mechanisms that increase how firms perform.

However, traditional IT governance mechanisms might no longer be valid in this digital era, Mulyana, Rusu and Perjons argue. And unfortunately, few studies have investigated this area. To gain new knowledge, the DSV researchers have done a systematic literature review. It provided them with 28 different IT governance mechanisms that influence digital transformation.

What are the implications of your study?
– We wish to contribute to both research and practice. The paper provides researchers with the IT governance mechanisms that influence digital transformation. Practitioners are supported to focus on these IT governance mechanisms towards a successful digital transformation, says Lazar Rusu.

Will you continue to do research in this area?
– Yes, as a future agenda, we see the need to validate further the identified IT governance mechanisms that influence digital transformation in different organizations. We want to learn more about their influence on the organizations’ performance, says Lazar Rusu.
