Nowadays, digital learning environments are increasingly used. Data from these environments can be used in new ways through Learning analytics, where AI helps generate data-based insights, for example to predict and identify students who risk future difficulties, and to provide formative feedback and intelligent recommendations that support better regulation of learning and teaching.

The Research Group on Learning Analytics and AI in Education at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences, with project leader Jalal Nouri and project members Panagiotis Papapetrou, Mohammed Saqr and Thashmee Karunaratne was awarded just over SEK 6 million by the Swedish Research Council for a four-year research project with focus on learning analytics and application of machine learning (AI) in an educational context. Within the project, analytical and methodological approaches to data-driven school development will be developed that address the above objectives. The grant from the Swedish Research Council is in the area of educational science where only 14% of applications was granted.
