The integration of e-learning into the education system is viewed as one of the responses to meet growing need for high quality education. However, in developing country contexts where there is a genuine need to join the knowledge society there is limited amount of knowledge about the use of e-learning to facilitate learning. In fact the actualization of e-learning for this purpose is very limited and in some cases lacking.

The focus is on how collaborative e-learning can be integrated in the teaching and learning process to support learning at the university level in a developing country context. The main research question to be answered in this thesis is How can collaborative e-learning support student learning at the University level in Uganda? 

In an effort to answer this research question three exploratory case studies were carried out at Makerere University, Uganda. The model is based on using students to support each other’s learning through four process stages: familiarization, assignment, review and feedback.

Peer assignment review process model for collaborative e-learning facilitated the students learning. Students were able to actively participate in the course, gain experience in critical reading and evaluating peers work, while reflecting on their own work.

This thesis provides a practical approach for designing and implementing collaborative e-learning approaches to support students learning at the university level in a developing country context.

  • Multimodal Communication for Participatory Planning and Decision Analysis: Tools and Process Models

    In public decision making, there is a need for research focussing on means for general stakeholders (such as the general public and NGOs) to provide their views, concerns and opinions. Not only to provide well-informed decision makers but to actually enable for stakeholders to take part in the decision-making process.

    Within this context, it is of great interest to investigate techniques and develop tools enabling the enrichment of the content communicated between decision makers, the stakeholders, and the public. Here, the use of multimodal interaction is not only an exciting opportunity but rather a key component. This project will, in the context of public decision making in local and regional governments, study multimodal communication using a variety of techniques and tools for the mediation of preferences, opinions, and expressions. That is, how appropriate a tool and media is to present, to illustrate and recreate expressions, its costs, reliability, and ease of use.

    Further, process models for how such enriched content may be encompassed and conceptualised in a process model for public decision making and planning to be used by decision making authorities shall be designed, conforming to well established principles from the area multi-criteria decision analysis. For this purpose we will build further on previous work in public decision analysis.
