Immersive Networking is concerned with scenarios which involve privacy, crowd-sensing and artificial intelligence in eXtended Reality experiences to address societal challenges, such as cultural heritage, learning, health, gaming, and transport, etc. Immersive Networking thus requires the study of technology areas such as the Internet-of-Things, Artificial Intelligence, Distributed computing, Security, and MR/AR/VR.

Towards a Connected Society

Participation in a connected society enabled by 5G, IoT, AI and Big Data require us to rethink the necessary massive sharing and access to information from users & sensor for interacting with each other and the things that we use in intertwined virtual & real experiences. Datacenters centralization of computations for artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and blockchain cannot continue to grow. Furthermore, the growrate of the Digital Universe (storage) is outpacing the capacity of communication infrastructure.

Distributed Internet-of-Things

In face of these shortcomings, the research therefore takes an alternative approach by studying how we may connect people, places and things by allowing any entity to own its data and computations. Key topics are thus the delegation of decisions and computations to entities existing both in interwined virtual and real universe (meta-verse), involving the study of representation and communication of presence, context and reachability.

The research has created a distributed Internet-of-Things platform ( for the experimentation with crowd-sourcing and crowd-sensing scenarios as well as novel methods and mechanisms.  The MediaSense IoT-platform has been used federate and host services in EU and Swedish national projects, and is an infrastructure used in the Stockholm Smart City infrastructure ( The research is carried out in collaboration with partners in industry, authorities, policy makers, and society nationally and internationally in- and outside the EU.
