The work that DSV carries on within this research area aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of how new ways of learning and teaching emerge as well as how designing learning milieux can address 21st Century learning competence and topics.

Our approach is interdisciplinary and focuses on the pedagogic, socio-cultural and organisational aspects that ar embedded in educational practices that currently unfold in schools and higher education.

Our work is carried out within projects funded by national and international funding agencies.

We cooperate closely with the Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching CEUL at Stockholm University.

We contribute to the editorial work of the International and Open Acces Journal Design for Learning published by Stockholm University Press. 

Multiple and diverse effects of technologies on learning and teaching practices

Development and design of technologies are scrutinized in order to find out how they reflect our practices and how they configure them through use. Of particular interest is to show the multifarious effects of technologies on individual, collective and institutional practices as well as the great potential that technologies bring into the world of learning and education.    

Theoretical frameworks & methodologies

Efforts are put in critically analysing and conceptualizing emergent practices bounded to the use of technologies (e.g., mobile communication technology, language technology, virtual reality, learning management systems, simulation systems, etc.). Our work is also dedicated to describing and explaining how the use of technologies redefines established understandings of learning. 

Design implications for 21st century learning and education

Our work aims to contribute with knowledge on how and what needs to be designed, re-designed or re-thought whislt developing technologies and applications dedicated to learning and education. In this sense our current work on design patterns and pattern languages that have been applied in conjunction with participatory design in many of our research projects with schools reflects the intention to contribute with knowledge and expertise on how to design for education.
