Managing and creating systems that will change the world

"My interest in computer systems started with a simple implementation of the Packman game long time ago. After that I came to realize the immense potential of computer science."

"Artificial intelligence is close to my heart, referring to systems that can teach themselves to improve and develop. Among other things, I have worked with self-learning systems that observe potential deviating behaviour at airports.

I have been teaching for about 10 years. My main objective for my teaching is to be like an action film, starting with a real bang, to capture interest. Then I try to get examples from reality, so that students have something to relate to. To complete the studies at DSV, you do not need an advanced mathematical background. The most important thing is that you are ready to fight, are a bit stubborn and of course passionate.

Data collection and analysis can be used in almost all areas. For example, analysing electronic health records can predict when certain patient groups will suffer from heart failure or whether an adverse drug event will occur.  Massive amounts of data are also exploited by intelligent computer systems on airplanes to quickly provide pilots with information about actions that need to be taken to better control the flight.

The purpose of data science is helping us humans to have a better life. You will learn methods, techniques and tools to analyse complex data sets in order to help individuals, companies and policy makers for tactical decision making. Data science is not only about replacing humans but balancing human intuition with strong, data-driven facts.

The job opportunities after completion of studies at DSV are immense. Data is everywhere around us and the need for enthusiastic individuals who can collect and analyse it is high in demand.”

Panagiotis Papapetrou, professor in computer and system science at DSV.
